to survive, humans have fought several battles, not only against other creatures or even their fellow humans, but against nature itself. Developing a human society made humans challenge many natural phenomena to conquer the surrounding environment to be able to survive, a struggle that remains ongoing until this very day.

Epidemics and diseases are one of the nature’s weapons in this battle; a mosquito bite resulted in the outbreak of malaria, water pollution led to cholera, as well as other epidemics, such as yellow fever and the plague that had almost led to the extinction of the human race. The greater the number of humans, the greater the need emerges for expanding human societies in order to accommodate such increase, which adds to the humans’ challenge to and abuse of the environment. In response, the environment fires its lethal weapon, i.e., epidemics.
